The Flanders Innovation & Entrepreneurship Agency (VLAIO) processes thousands of subsidy applications each year. To boost efficiency and strengthen fraud prevention, VLAIO partnered with us to build a solution on Azure and Databricks. We developed a sophisticated fraud detection system using anomaly detection, rule-based methods, community detection, and supervised classification. With AI explainability, inspectors receive clear justifications for flagged cases, ensuring transparency and enabling targeted investigations.
Building on this foundation, we created an AI-powered working environment that automates case assignments and deploys AI agents to streamline information processing. This integrated approach has significantly improved efficiency, helping VLAIO recover around €150 million in Covid-related subsidies. By combining advanced analytics with Generative AI, we’ve shown how AI can transform public services—driving efficiency, transparency, and fiscal responsibility.
