The \u2018EVOLVE \u2013 Digital Transformation Summit 2025<\/a><\/strong>\u2019, organised by APDC<\/strong>, reaffirmed itself as a benchmark stage for the presentation of concrete cases of digital transformation in Portugal. The event, held at the Bel\u00e9m Cultural Centre on 14 October, focused on demonstrating how the strategic adoption of new technologies translates into measurable impact and real value for business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this context, Devoteam and Galp shared their success story: \u2018FinOps in a Multi-cloud Environment<\/strong>\u2019. The session was presented by Pedro Caeiro<\/strong>, Executive Director & Head of Distributed Cloud<\/em> at Devoteam, and In\u00eas Santos<\/strong>, Head of Strategy, Portfolio and Performance<\/em> at Galp, and revealed how one of the country’s largest energy companies overcame a critical challenge in its cloud journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u2018FinOps in a Multi-cloud Environment<\/strong>\u2019 project represented more than just technical optimisation. As In\u00eas Santos<\/strong> began by saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u2018Galp\u2019s FinOps journey is much more than digital transformation; it is a journey of cultural change and a change in teams\u2019 mindset.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The starting point<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The challenge was significant: cloud costs were high, with annual increases not offset by revenue, and visibility into resource allocation was also a critical issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018In addition to the difficulties in understanding where the spending was going, there was a lack of real-time tools to grasp the situation. The resources existed in the cloud, but they were not identified, nor were the supporting processes or applications in place.\u2019<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

It was in this context that Galp approached Devoteam as a partner to make the management of cloud financial costs more sustainable, a project which, according to Pedro Caeiro<\/strong>, required a \u2018multidisciplinary exercise\u2019 and the use of Devoteam’s experience to quickly identify immediate optimisations and ensure a return on investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The strategy<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The focus was on creating a transformation plan that would deliver tangible results from the outset and motivate the involvement of teams and decision-makers. The approach included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Governance and Accountability<\/strong>: Implementation of centralised governance, while promoting accountability and team involvement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    • Real-time visibility<\/strong>: Implementation of the Apptio tool (IBM), which ensured 95% visibility of the company’s cloud universe.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      • Actions and Policies<\/strong>: Implementation of an operational model, tagging initiatives, and the creation of a joint FinOps team for cost reduction and savings plans.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        Pedro Caeiro<\/strong> emphasised that this approach of \u2018showing quick wins\u2019 was essential to solidify buy-in and ensure stakeholder engagement:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \u2018We were able to show results quickly, allowing people within the organisation to realise that it was possible and securing their involvement.\u2019<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

        The results<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

        The project proved to be fundamental to a sustainable cloud strategy and the consolidation of a culture of responsibility based on awareness. In\u00eas Santos<\/strong> shared the \u2018extraordinary\u2019 results of a year’s work:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        • Annual optimisation of 2.4 million<\/strong> euros<\/strong>, representing 30% of total cloud costs;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          <\/p>\n\n\n\n

          • Increased coverage of usage commitments<\/strong> (such as Saving Plans and RIs), from 10% to 75%, ensuring greater predictability and long-term financial control over computing resources;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

            • Over 600 initiatives implemented <\/strong>and increased workloads.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
