This includes developing models where the likely benefits outweigh the risks. Examples include advancing AI research through rigorous scientific methods, accelerating scientific discovery, and focusing on solving real-world problems.
Responsible Development and Deployment
Recognising the emerging and transformative nature of AI, Google pursues its development responsibly throughout its lifecycle. This involves implementing human oversight, due diligence, and feedback mechanisms. Furthermore, they develop technical solutions to mitigate risks. Rigorous design and testing are employed to avoid harm and bias. Google also promotes privacy, security, and respect for intellectual property rights. Tools like SynthID, which watermarks AI-generated content, exemplify this commitment.
Collaborative Progress, Together

- Data Security and Privacy: Devoteamers are instructed not to share sensitive, confidential, or personal data with GenAI technologies without proper anonymisation and client consent, adhering to data protection laws like GDPR. They have developed Explainable AI, an AI service that quantifies each data factor’s contribution to the output of a machine learning model. These summaries help users understand why a model made specific decisions, enabling them to improve their models or share insights with model consumers. While acknowledging that AI Explanations reflect patterns in the data rather than fundamental relationships, Google Cloud strives to provide straightforward and useful explanation methods.
Model interpretability is critical to our ability to optimise AI and solve the problem in the best possible way.

- Data Encryption (default and Cloud KMS): All data in Google Cloud is encrypted by default, both in transit and at rest. Customers can also manage their own encryption keys using Cloud KMS for greater control. Client-side encryption, where customers retain full control of encryption keys, is also available.
- Data Masking and Tokenization (Cloud DLP): Google’s Cloud Data Loss Prevention (DLP) automatically detects, obfuscates, and de-identifies sensitive information using techniques like data masking and tokenisation. This helps to reduce the risk of compliance violations and allows for safer data analysis.
- Fine-Grained Access Control (BigQuery): BigQuery supports fine-grained access control at the column and row levels. This, combined with DLP, enables the creation of datasets with both clear and masked/encrypted versions of data. - Data Catalog: This provides a fully managed and scalable service to centralise metadata and support data discovery. Importantly, it adheres to the same access controls as the underlying data. This ensures users cannot search for data they have no authorisation to access.
- Cloud Audit Logs: Users can use these logs to track who did what, where, and when across Google Cloud services. This ensures compliance with internal and external audits.
- Cloud IAM (Identity and Access Management): This service allows for granular control over who has access to which Google Cloud resources, which is crucial for maintaining data security and privacy.
