Another year, another fantastic AWS Community Day in Utrecht, and let me tell you, the Dutch AWS cloud scene is buzzing! This wasn’t just a conference; it was a masterclass in cloud innovation, deep engineering principles, and practical real-world use cases. As colleagues from Devoteam, we (Alexandros Oikonomidis and Rajesh Gunasekaran) divided and conquered to bring you this combined recap of a day filled with everything from modular turtles and AI-driven engineering to a glorious Serverless vs. Kubernetes showdown.
For those of us in the Netherlands, it was particularly encouraging to hear from none other than Danielle Gorlick, Director & General Manager Benelux at AWS, and the legendary Jeff Barr, VP & Chief Evangelist. Danielle’s optimistic take on the massive opportunity for AWS adoption in the Netherlands was infectious, and her emphasis on European sovereignty struck a chord. It’s clear that AWS is committed to helping the Dutch community realise its full cloud potential.
Kicking Off the Day: Two Perspectives on the Keynotes
The day started with two powerful, complementary keynotes that set the stage for the technical deep dives to follow.
Alexandros on Modularity
The day kicked off for me with Luc van Donkersgoed’s journey down the rabbit hole in “It’s turtles all the way down – a journey into modularity.” Luc used this quirky metaphor to explain how modularity is the single most important concept in software design. The key takeaway? Don’t build a single, monolithic super-turtle; build a stack of small, agile ones. It’s a powerful lesson in why AWS managed services, with their well-defined interfaces, are a developer’s best friend, letting us focus on business logic instead of infrastructure.
Rajesh on the Engineering Mindset
Meanwhile, my day began with a thought-provoking keynote by Gunnar Grosch, “The engineering mindset in the age of AI: Beyond vibe coding.” Gunnar brilliantly argued that as AI makes writing code easier, solid engineering principles become even more critical. His challenge to move beyond intuition-based “vibe coding” was a call to action. As his slides noted, our value now lies in building systems that are Correct, Efficient, Secure, and Maintainable—it’s about the architecture, not just the prompts.
A Dive into the Breakout Sessions
With our minds buzzing, we split up to cover a wide array of breakout sessions.
Alexandros saw real-world serverless and data in action
- Ricardo Cino from PostNL gave a transparent look into the “Challenges of using Private AppSync for 1100 Parcel Lockers.” He didn’t just highlight successes; he shared the mistakes and valuable lessons learned in a private network, a testament to the power of community.
- His colleague, Matheus das Merces, wowed us with “Next-Level Infrastructure as Code with AWS CDK and LocalStack.” He showed how combining CDK with LocalStack, Aspects, and Blueprints drastically speeds up the development cycle by enabling local testing.
- For data enthusiasts, Jacob Verhoeks from Schuberg Philis delivered an excellent talk on “Building a Scalable Data Platform with AWS S3 Tables, Iceberg and Snowflake,” showcasing the powerful synergy of AWS Glue, S3, and Snowflake in a modern data lakehouse.
Rajesh took a deep dive into observability and security
- Nova Lailatul Rizkiyah’s session on “Modern Logging on AWS” was a masterclass in turning logging from a reactive chore into a proactive tool. She provided a clear comparison of services like Amazon CloudWatch, Amazon OpenSearch, and Grafana to help teams catch issues faster.
- Later, Masoom’s talk, “Drowning in Security Alerts?”, was a game-changer. He demonstrated an impressive architecture for automating security posture management at scale using AWS Security Hub, EventBridge, and Lambda to move from simple detection to automated remediation.
The Main Event: The Final Showdown
Then came the moment many were waiting for: Davide de Paolis and Damiano Giorgi stepped into the ring for the “Serverless vs Kubernetes: the final showdown.” This wasn’t a talk; it was a wrestling match of ideas. They grappled with everything from complexity and scalability to cost. While there was no clear winner—as they rightly concluded, “it depends”—the session brilliantly highlighted the unique strengths of each, reminding us that for many use cases, Serverless offers unmatched simplicity and cost-effectiveness.
More Than Talks: The Power of Community
As a volunteer for the second year in a row, Rajesh can attest that the true magic of this event happens between the sessions. Our personal conversations were just as enriching as the talks themselves.
Alexandros had a great chat with Remon van Gijn from Nationale-Nederlanden about the real-world, “non-technical, and even non-human stakeholders” involved in AI adoption. Meanwhile, Rajesh caught up with experts like Gunnar Grosch and Rudy Chetty, discussing everything from Gen-AI’s practical applications to the excitement for AWS re:Invent 2025.
The day was capped off with the Speaker and Organisers dinner, a fantastic opportunity to unwind and connect with the brilliant speakers and the dedicated crew who made the event possible.
