For Spotify, the world’s leading audio streaming platform, productivity and collaboration are central to its day-to-day operations. As a longstanding Google Workspace customer and an early adopter of Generative AI, it was only natural that Spotify would pilot Gemini for Enterprise when it was introduced in 2023.
With AI tools playing an increasingly important role in enhancing productivity, Spotify’s Productivity Engineering team was tasked to deliver a solution that was secure, controllable, and scalable, ensuring seamless integration with Spotify’s diverse workflows. With the company leveraging a wide array of AI tools across its platform, adherence to Spotify’s AI Ethics standards was paramount. As AI solutions rapidly emerged throughout the tech ecosystem, Spotify had to carefully evaluate and prioritise its AI partners for scalability and technical competence – while also determining when to leverage its own internal engineering expertise. The team needed to meet stringent security and privacy requirements, foster internal awareness of the tools capabilities, and enhance productivity by harnessing its full potential.
As a longstanding Google Workspace customer, Google Workspace with Gemini presented a unique opportunity by bringing Google’s advanced capabilities directly into familiar applications like Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Meet. As a versatile productivity tool, Gemini helps draft emails, generate documents, analyse data, create presentations, and enhance meetings productivity. By providing intelligent assistance throughout daily tasks, Gemini streamlines workflows, saves time, and fosters greater creativity.
Piloting with Devoteam
Devoteam, Spotify’s Google Workspace partner since 2014 and one of EMEA’s largest Google Cloud Partners, facilitated Spotify’s access to the Early Access product and liaised with Google Cloud’s Product Managers to enable a seamless integration.
In Spring 2024, Devoteam partnered with Spotify to design a pilot program and train 200 early-access employees from its Technology and Business teams on Gemini. The strong interest in the initiative led to an additional 150 users joining the pilot within just a few weeks.
Gemini was a significant commitment for us, making the pilot essential. We wanted to ensure it was the right fit for Spotify—not just another AI tool for its own sake, but something that would truly benefit our people and the company. It allowed us to determine the best way to introduce AI to all Spotify employees.
Cesca Ashcroft, Product Manager for the collab tooling space at Spotify, emphasising the pilot’s importance and fostering excitement for the technology with change management.
Full Implementation: Gemini for All
After deciding to roll out Gemini to all 9,000 Spotify employees, Devoteam was the natural launch partner.
From the start, we knew that Spotify’s innovative and creative band members would only want accurate, and personalised interactive AI content. The most disruptive technological shift in decades had to be minimally disruptive to everyone’s daily routine.
Simone French,
Google Cloud Work Transformation Tribe Lead EMEA at Devoteam
Devoteam created interactive training modules hosted on Spotify’s internal learning platform. The training covered prompting, creating content with Generative AI, and integrating Gemini into daily team tasks for enhanced collaboration. Custom informational videos and quizzes were developed to test and strengthen users’ knowledge.
To reinforce learning and adoption, Devoteam created a digital campaign featuring an advent calendar with daily tasks and in-depth explanations of specific AI functions within Google Workspace applications leading up to the Christmas holidays.
Working with Devoteam’s Google Cloud team on the Google Workspace with Gemini training was seamless. Their responsiveness to feedback and ability to deliver clear, concise training videos were especially valuable. By incorporating Spotify-specific use cases, they ensured the training was both practical and highly relevant for our teams. Their close collaboration with Spotify’s Tech Learning team reflected a strong commitment to supporting effective learning and technology adoption.
Maya Brandel,
Head of Tech Learning at Spotify
Through Devoteam’s support, Gemini is now an integral part of meetings, taking notes, brainstorming, and saving time across the board.
